Live Red Wigglers
Red wigglers are the smaller cousin of the night crawler. They're active, wriggly and the perfect size for animals that can't handle a full night crawler. They're a great pick for baby and juvenile turtles, smaller frogs, newts, salamanders, axolotls and fish. Like night crawlers, they're high in moisture and low in fat, so they work as a regular part of the diet.
Tips from our team:
- Store them cool, around 55–70°F, in their bedding. Don't put them in the fridge like night crawlers; that's too cold for them. A cool basement or closet is perfect.
- Keep the bedding damp, not soggy.
- Rinse them off before feeding to aquatic animals so bedding doesn't cloud the water.
- When they're stressed, red wigglers give off a slightly bitter fluid, and a few picky eaters will turn them down. A quick rinse usually takes care of it. If your animal still refuses them, try night crawlers instead.
- Never feed worms dug from the yard. Stick with farm-raised worms.
