Live Hornworms
Hornworms are bright green, soft-bodied and hard for most animals to resist. They're high in moisture and low in fat, with more calcium than most feeders, so they're a great way to add both nutrition and hydration to your animal's diet. They're a favorite for chameleons, bearded dragons, crested and leopard geckos, monitors, tegus and frogs, and they're often the feeder that wins over a picky eater. The "horn" on their tail looks tough, but it's completely harmless.
Tips from our team:
- They grow fast. Keep them warm, around 75–80°F, and they'll grow from about 1" to 3–4" in a week or two. To slow them down, keep them cooler, around 55–60°F. Don't refrigerate them.
- Keep them in the cup they came in, which already has all the food they need. Don't give them anything else to eat.
- Wipe the droppings off the lid every day or two so they don't mold.
- Never feed hornworms from your garden. Wild ones eat tomato and tobacco plants, which make them toxic to your animal. Stick with farm-raised hornworms.
- Because they're so juicy, feed them as part of a varied diet. Too many at once can cause loose stools.
- Dust with calcium right before feeding. If a hornworm turns dark or shrivels, throw it out.
