Live Night Crawlers
Night crawlers are big, juicy earthworms, and they're one of the most natural foods you can offer. They're high in moisture and protein and low in fat, so they make a healthy staple for a lot of animals, not just a treat. They're a favorite for aquatic and box turtles, pacman and other large frogs, salamanders, axolotls and larger fish, and they're a great addition for tegus, monitors and blue-tongue skinks too.
Tips from our team:
- Keep them in the fridge, around 40–50°F, in the container they came in. Kept cool and moist, they'll last for weeks.
- For smaller animals, cut them into bite-size pieces. Pieces wiggle, so animals still go for them.
- Rinse them off before feeding to aquatic animals so bedding doesn't cloud the water.
- Never feed worms dug from the yard. They can carry pesticides, fertilizers and parasites. Stick with farm-raised worms.
- Dusting is optional. If you dust, coat them right before feeding, since the calcium sticks to their moist skin.
