Live Springtail Culture

Springtails are tiny white insect relatives that do two jobs. In a bioactive enclosure, they're a cleanup crew: they eat mold, leftover food and waste, which keeps the setup healthier. They're also a great live food for very small animals like dart frog froglets, thumbnail frogs and spiderlings. Each culture is live and breeding, so one culture can seed an enclosure or keep feeding for weeks.

Tips from our team:

  • Seeding a bioactive enclosure? Add springtails to the soil a week or two before your animals go in, so they can settle in and start breeding.
  • Never let the culture dry out. Springtails need constant moisture, so keep it damp and keep the lid on.
  • Feed lightly. A small pinch of springtail food, rice or yeast once or twice a week is plenty. Take out anything that gets moldy and isn't being eaten.
  • Keep it at room temperature, out of direct sun.
  • To feed them off, tap a few springtails into the enclosure, or set a piece of their culture material in for your animals to pick from.
