Fruit Fly Cup: Hydei
Hydei are the larger of the two fruit flies we carry, about 3–4 mm, roughly twice the size of melanogaster. Each cup is a live, producing culture of flightless fruit flies, so they can't fly away and you get new flies hatching for weeks. They're a great fit for dart frogs that have outgrown melanogaster, larger thumbnail and tinctorius-type frogs, juvenile chameleons, mantids and small spiders.
Tips from our team:
- Pick the right fly for your animal. If hydei are too big, our melanogaster cups are the smaller option.
- Keep the culture at room temperature, about 70–78°F. Hydei don't handle heat well, and a warm spot can stop the culture from producing.
- Dust before feeding. Tap some flies into a cup with a pinch of calcium or vitamin powder, swirl gently and pour them in.
- Keep the lid on between feedings. They're flightless, but they can still climb out.
- Expect a slower start. Hydei take about 3–4 weeks from egg to adult, longer than melanogaster, so give a new culture time to build up.
