Frozen Rodents
Frozen rodents are the safest and easiest way to feed your snake or other carnivore. A frozen rodent can't bite or scratch your animal, they keep for months in the freezer, and you can stock up so you always have the right size on hand. We carry mice from pinky to jumbo, rats from pinky to jumbo, and rabbits from 1 lb to over 10 lbs, so there's a meal for everything from a baby corn snake to a big boa or monitor.
Tips from our team:
- Pick prey about as wide as the widest part of your animal's body. Too small is better than too big.
- Thaw in the fridge overnight, or in a sealed bag in warm water. Never use the microwave, which can cook it unevenly or make it burst.
- Warm it to about body temperature right before feeding. Snakes hunt by heat, so a warm meal gets a much better feeding response.
- Offer it with feeding tongs, not your fingers, and give it a little wiggle to get your animal's attention.
- Never refreeze a rodent once it's thawed. If your animal doesn't eat it, throw it out.
- Keep them frozen, ideally at 0°F, and use them within about 6 months. Wash your hands after handling, like you would with raw meat.
