Frozen Rabbits

When your animal outgrows rats, frozen rabbits are the next step. One rabbit makes a full, substantial meal, so big eaters need fewer feedings, and frozen is the safest way to offer prey this size. A live rabbit can kick and scratch hard enough to injure your animal. They're a great fit for large boas, Burmese and reticulated pythons, and big monitors. We carry them by weight, from 1 lb up to 10+ lbs, so you can match the meal to your animal as it grows.

Tips from our team:

  • Pick a rabbit no wider than the thickest part of your animal's body. When in doubt, go a size smaller.
  • Give it time to thaw. Thaw it in the fridge: about a day for smaller rabbits, and up to 2 days for the bigger sizes. Never use the microwave, and don't leave it out on the counter all day.
  • Make sure it's thawed all the way through. A rabbit can feel soft outside and still be frozen in the middle, and a cold center can make your animal regurgitate.
  • Warm it to about body temperature right before feeding, either in a sealed bag in warm water or with a hair dryer on the head. Snakes hunt by heat, so a warm meal gets a much better response.
  • Switching from rats? Some animals hesitate at first. Rubbing a thawed rat on the rabbit to transfer the scent usually does the trick.
  • Offer it with long feeding tongs, and keep your hands well clear. Big snakes strike hard.
  • Never refreeze a rabbit once it's thawed. If your animal doesn't eat it, throw it out. Keep them sealed in the freezer at 0°F, and use them within about 6 months.
