Jumping Spider Care: Enclosure, Feeding, and Why They Make Great First Inverts

Something unusual happens the first time you meet a jumping spider properly. You lean toward the enclosure, and the spider turns to look at you. Not a startled scuttle, not a defensive freeze. It rotates, fixes those enormous front eyes on your face, and watches you with what genuinely reads as curiosity.
That moment is why jumping spiders went from a niche corner of the invertebrate hobby to one of the fastest growing pets in the exotic trade. They're small, they're cheap to keep, they need almost no space, and they have more visible personality per gram than nearly anything else you can put on a desk.
They're also easy to kill through two specific mistakes, both of which come from applying reptile or tarantula logic to an animal that lives by different rules. Why Jumping Spiders Work So Well as a First Invertebrate
The invertebrate hobby has historically run on tarantulas and scorpions, both of which are excellent animals that spend most of their existence being a lump in a burrow. Jumping spiders are a completely different proposition.
They're Awake When You Are
Jumpers are strictly diurnal. They hunt, explore, and go about their business during daylight hours, which means you actually see your pet. Compare that with a nocturnal tarantula you might glimpse twice a month.
They Actually Look Back
Jumping spiders belong to the family Salticidae, which is the largest family of spiders on earth at over 6,000 species. Their defining feature is vision. They have eight eyes in three rows, and the two enormous forward facing ones deliver high resolution stereoscopic color vision that's arguably the sharpest of any arthropod.
That visual system exists because their entire hunting strategy is stalking and pouncing, sometimes leaping 20 to 50 times their own body length onto a target. Calculating that trajectory takes real processing power, and it's why jumpers display a level of environmental awareness that people find startling. They track you across a room. They investigate new objects. They watch.
They Take Up No Space
An adult jumping spider lives comfortably in an enclosure smaller than a shoebox. If you're in an apartment, a dorm, or a house where a four foot enclosure is not happening, this is a serious advantage.
They're Harmless to You
Jumping spiders are venomous in the technical sense, as all spiders are, and that venom is calibrated for subduing insects. They're extremely reluctant to bite humans, and a bite carries no medical significance beyond a minor irritation. This is not a dangerous animal.
Which Species You'll Actually Find
The pet trade centers almost entirely on the genus Phidippus, and two species dominate.
Regal Jumping Spider (Phidippus regius)
The star of the hobby, native to the southeastern United States and the Caribbean, and the largest jumping spider in eastern North America.
Adult males average around 12 mm in body length with striking black and white patterning and iridescent green or blue chelicerae (the fangs). Females run larger at roughly 15 mm, with exceptional individuals reaching 22 mm, and they come in a much wider color range: gray, tan, orange, peach, rust, often with pink or purple chelicerae. The sexual dimorphism is dramatic enough that people regularly mistake males and females for different species.
Bold Jumper (Phidippus audax)
Found across North America and probably living on your porch right now. Predominantly black with white, orange, or red abdominal markings that change with each instar. Slightly smaller than regius on average and extremely adaptable. Care is identical.
The Vertical Imperative: Enclosure Design
This is the single most important thing in this guide, and it's the piece people coming from reptile keeping consistently get wrong.
Why Horizontal Tanks Fail
Jumping spiders are hardwired to seek the highest available point. In the wild they hunt in tall grass, on tree trunks, and up the sides of buildings, and they build their silk sleeping retreats, called hibernacula, at the top of whatever space they occupy.
Put one in a standard horizontal aquarium and it will still do this. It'll migrate to a top corner and spin its hammock there. Then, every time you open the top lid to feed or mist, you tear the spider's home apart. Repeat that a few times a week and you have a chronically stressed animal that's constantly rebuilding.
Give it vertical space instead and the whole problem evaporates.
Size and Orientation
The enclosure must be taller than it is wide. For an adult Phidippus regius, roughly 4 x 4 x 7 inches is the practical minimum, and they'll happily use more height.
Spiderlings are the exception. A tiny sling in a large enclosure genuinely struggles to find its prey, and it can starve surrounded by food it never encountered. Keep slings in small containers, inverted deli cups or purpose built acrylic micro enclosures, and upgrade as they grow.
Front or Bottom Opening
Because the spider lives at the top, the enclosure needs to open somewhere else. Front opening doors or bottom opening designs let you feed, mist, and clean without touching the hammock. Magnetic front doors have become the standard on purpose built jumping spider enclosures for exactly this reason.
Glass Versus Acrylic
Both work. Acrylic is light, clear, cheap, and easy to drill for ventilation, but it scratches and can warp under humidity swings. Glass is scratch resistant with better long term clarity and more weight, and the higher end jumping spider enclosures are usually glass with magnetic doors and engineered vents.
For a first spider, an inexpensive acrylic enclosure designed specifically for jumpers is the sensible choice. You'll spend under thirty dollars and get the orientation and ventilation right by default.
Ventilation Is Life Support
If the vertical thing is the most misunderstood requirement, this is the most lethal one.
Jumping spiders breathe through book lungs and tracheae using passive gas exchange. There's no mechanical pumping involved. That makes ambient airflow a physiological necessity rather than a nice extra. Stagnant, humid air in a sealed container breeds mold and bacteria, and it kills spiders.
Cross Ventilation and the Stack Effect
Cross ventilation means vents on opposite sides of the enclosure so air moves through rather than sitting.
The better version exploits basic physics. Place intake vents low on one side and exhaust vents high on the opposite side. Moisture evaporating from the substrate warms slightly, becomes less dense, rises, and exits the top vents, drawing fresh air in through the bottom. That's the stack effect, and it gives you continuous passive airflow with no equipment at all.
Practically: if you're modifying your own enclosure, put holes low on one wall and high on the far wall. Don't just punch a few holes in the lid and call it ventilated.
Why Mesh Is a Hazard
Metal mesh seems like the obvious ventilation material and it's a genuinely bad idea here. A jumping spider's delicate tarsal claws and fangs can get caught in mesh, and a trapped spider will injure itself trying to pull free.
Drilled holes work but have to be under about 1 mm, or fruit flies escape and slings can squeeze out. The modern solution on 3D printed and laser cut enclosures is thin elongated ventilation slits, which give far more airflow area than round holes while staying too narrow for even Drosophila to pass.
Substrate, Decor, and Enrichment
Substrate does two jobs here, and neither is what you'd assume.
The first is humidity buffering. Coconut fiber, peat moss, or sphagnum moss holds moisture and releases it slowly into the air, keeping ambient humidity in a reasonable band without you misting constantly.
The second is fall protection, which people rarely think about. Jumping spiders are agile, but they do slip, and older spiders slip more as the microscopic adhesive pads on their feet degrade. A fall onto bare plastic can rupture an abdomen and kill the animal. A soft substrate layer absorbs that.
For decor, think vertical. Cork bark tubes, sterilized twigs, and silk or live plants that draw the spider upward. Make sure there are solid anchor points near the top for hammock building, ideally leaves or ledges tucked into a corner. Secure anything heavy with 100 percent silicone or hot glue so nothing can shift and crush the spider.
A bioactive setup works beautifully here. Springtails and small isopods handle mold and waste, live plants hold humidity, and the whole system becomes largely self cleaning in a container this small. If you already keep bioactive terrariums, a jumping spider is one of the easiest additions you'll ever make.
Temperature and Light
Do Jumping Spiders Need Heat?
Usually no, and this is one of the most searched questions by new keepers.
Phidippus regius does well between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day with a slight drop to 70 to 75 at night. That's ordinary room temperature in most homes, so supplemental heat is typically unnecessary.
If your home consistently sits below 68 degrees, a low wattage heat mat on a thermostat can help, with two hard rules. Never place it directly against the spider's resting area, because localized heat desiccates a small animal fast. And never put the enclosure in direct sunlight through a window. A clear enclosure in a sunbeam becomes a greenhouse and can exceed 100 degrees within minutes, which is lethal.
Light Matters More Than Heat
Here's the requirement people miss. Jumping spiders are visual hunters, and in a dim enclosure they simply won't hunt. A spider kept somewhere too dark goes lethargic, refuses food, and sits in its hammock waiting for conditions that never arrive. Owners then panic about a sick spider that's actually just in the dark.
Give it 10 to 12 hours of bright ambient room light, or run a small LED terrarium light on a timer. UVB isn't required for the spider itself, though full spectrum lighting helps live plants in a bioactive build.
Hydration
Jumpers get a lot of moisture from the hemolymph of their prey, but they still need to drink, and dehydration is a leading cause of molting failure.
Misting
Target roughly 60 to 80 percent ambient humidity. The method is a light mist on one wall of the enclosure daily or every other day. The spider will find the droplets and drink directly from the glass.
Mist one side only, never the whole enclosure, and never to the point of sogginess. Remember that stagnant wet air is the thing you're actively trying to avoid.
The Spiderling Drowning Risk
For slings in early instars, droplet size genuinely matters. Surface tension on a large water droplet is strong enough to trap and drown a tiny spider. Use the finest mist setting you have, or mist the outside wall and let condensation form. This is a real and preventable cause of sling deaths.
Water Dishes
Juveniles and adults can have a shallow water receptacle, and a plastic bottle cap works perfectly. Put a few small pebbles or a piece of clean sponge inside so the spider always has solid footing while drinking and can't fall in.
What Do Pet Jumping Spiders Eat?
They're obligate insectivores, and watching them hunt is a genuine highlight of keeping them. They use their dragline silk like a bungee cord and pounce with remarkable precision.
Feeder Options
- Fruit flies. The sling staple. Drosophila melanogaster for early instars, the larger D. hydei for mid sized juveniles.
- Pinhead and small crickets. Excellent hunting response, easy to source.
- House flies and blue bottle flies. Outstanding for adults. Flying prey triggers the jumper's natural arboreal hunting behavior better than anything else. Many keepers buy spikes (maggots), refrigerate them, and hatch out a few at a time.
- Small roaches. Dubia and red runners are nutrient dense and easy to keep.
- Mealworms and waxworms. Treats only. Waxworms are fatty, which makes them useful for a post molt boost or for conditioning a gravid female, but they're a poor staple.
Never feed wild caught insects. Pesticide residue that a bird would shrug off will kill a spider this size.
Sizing Prey: The Abdomen Rule
Offer prey no larger than the spider's abdomen. Jumpers are bold enough to attack things twice their size, and sometimes they win, but a large cricket has strong mandibles and spiky legs that can seriously injure or kill your spider. Their confidence exceeds their durability.
The abdomen also tells you whether to feed at all. A hungry spider has a narrow, shrunken abdomen. A well fed one is round and plump. If the abdomen looks tight and distended like a full water balloon, stop feeding. At that point a fall can rupture it.

Slings need constant fuel because they're molting every few weeks. Adults do not, and overfeeding an adult shortens its already short life.
The Molt Cycle
A spider's exoskeleton doesn't grow, so it has to be shed and replaced. Molting, or ecdysis, is the most dangerous recurring event in a jumping spider's life, and it's the source of nearly every panicked forum post about jumpers.
Pre Molt Fasting and Why Owners Panic
Here's the scenario. Your previously active, food obsessed spider suddenly retreats into its hammock, seals itself in, refuses food, and goes dull in color. Days pass. It doesn't come out.
It's almost certainly in pre molt. This is a hormonally driven process, the fasting is normal and mandatory, and the spider is not sick.
What to Do, and What Not to Do
The single most important action: remove all live prey immediately. A cricket loose in the enclosure with a molting spider is a genuine threat. A freshly molted spider is soft, defenseless, and completely unable to escape, and a hungry cricket will eat it.
Beyond that, do nothing. Don't open the enclosure repeatedly to check. Don't poke the hammock. Don't try to help. Keep humidity in normal range, since dehydration is what causes molts to fail, and wait.
Slings molt every 3 to 4 weeks; intervals lengthen as they mature. After a successful molt the spider will be brighter, slightly larger, and hungry within a few days. Offer something soft and easy first.
The Final Molt
When a jumping spider reaches sexual maturity, that's it. It's in its ultimate instar and will never molt again. Adults do not grow further, and the arrival of that final molt effectively starts the clock on the rest of the animal's life.
Handling Your Jumping Spider
Jumping spiders are one of the few invertebrates that genuinely tolerate and arguably enjoy interaction. They're curious, they're not defensive, and many will walk onto an offered hand voluntarily.
A few rules make it safe for both of you:
- Let the spider come to you. Place a flat hand in the enclosure and wait. Never grab or pinch.
- Stay low. Sit on the floor or work over a table. The real risk in handling is a fall, and a drop from standing height onto a hard floor can rupture an abdomen.
- Wash your hands first, with plain water. Soap residue, lotion, and hand sanitizer are all harmful.
- Watch for the dragline. Your spider will often anchor a silk line before jumping. Don't yank a hand away when you feel it; you may pull the spider off balance.
- Keep it short. A few minutes is plenty.
Bites are extremely rare and medically trivial, usually the result of a spider being squeezed. If one does bite, it's comparable to a small pinch and needs nothing beyond washing.
Lifespan, Sexing, and Buying
How Long Do Jumping Spiders Live?
This is the honest part, and it's the thing to understand before you get attached.
Captive jumping spiders generally live about one to two years total from egg, and the adult stage is a fraction of that. Females live meaningfully longer than males, which is why many keepers specifically seek out females. A mature male you buy today might have a few months left; a young female could give you the better part of a year.
That's short. It's the main tradeoff of the species, and there's no husbandry trick that extends it much. What you can do is buy young, buy captive bred, and not overfeed, since overfeeding demonstrably shortens adult lifespan.
Sexing
In mature Phidippus regius it's straightforward. Males are smaller with bold black and white patterning and iridescent green or blue chelicerae, and they have visibly swollen, boxing glove shaped pedipalps (the small appendages by the mouth). Females are larger and heavier bodied, come in oranges, tans, and grays, and have an epigynum, a small plate on the underside of the abdomen.
Before maturity, sexing is unreliable. Sellers offering "guaranteed female" slings are usually guessing.
Buying Captive Bred
Buy captive bred whenever you can. Captive bred spiders are acclimated to enclosure life, arrive without the stress and parasite load of wild collection, and come with a known age, which matters enormously when the total lifespan is this short. A wild caught adult female could be nearly at the end of her life the day you get her.
Bringing It All Together
Jumping spider care comes down to five things. Give it a vertical enclosure that opens from the front or bottom. Build in cross ventilation, low on one side and high on the other. Keep it bright, because a spider in the dark won't hunt. Feed prey no bigger than its abdomen, and let the abdomen tell you when to feed. And when it seals itself into its hammock and stops eating, pull the crickets out and leave it alone.
What you get in return is disproportionate. For under fifty dollars of setup and a few minutes a week, you get an animal that recognizes movement, tracks you across a room, hunts with visible strategy, and will sit on your hand watching the world. It's the most interactive invertebrate in the hobby and one of the few that consistently converts people who were sure they didn't like spiders.
Just go in knowing the clock is short. Keep the spider well, enjoy the year, and appreciate it while you have it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep two jumping spiders in the same enclosure?
No. Jumping spiders are solitary and readily cannibalistic, and housing two together reliably ends with one spider eating the other regardless of size or sex. Even breeding pairs are introduced under supervision and separated immediately afterward. One spider per enclosure, always.
My jumping spider escaped in my house. Will it survive?
Often yes, at least for a while, since houses contain small insects and jumpers are excellent hunters. Look for it on windows and near light sources during the day, because they're drawn to bright areas where prey gathers. Place the open enclosure nearby with a fresh water source, and check curtain tops and upper wall corners, since a loose jumper will climb.
Why is my jumping spider hanging upside down and not moving?
If it's inside its silk hammock, it's almost certainly in pre molt or actively molting, and it needs to be left completely alone with all live prey removed. If it's out in the open, curled with legs drawn tightly underneath, that's the death curl and usually indicates dehydration or a failed molt. Raise humidity slightly and offer a water droplet, but recovery from a true death curl is uncommon.
Do jumping spiders recognize their owners?
They clearly respond to movement and appear to distinguish between familiar and novel stimuli, and many keepers report their spiders behaving differently around them than around strangers. Whether that constitutes recognition in a meaningful sense is genuinely unsettled. What's not in doubt is that their vision and spatial processing are exceptional for an arthropod, so they're perceiving far more of you than most invertebrates can.
What do I do if my jumping spider stops eating but isn't in a hammock?
Check the obvious environmental causes first: an enclosure that's too dim means the spider can't hunt effectively, and temperatures below about 70 degrees suppress appetite. Then look at the abdomen, since a plump spider simply isn't hungry and doesn't need to eat every few days. If the abdomen is shrunken, the enclosure is bright and warm, and the spider still refuses food over a week or more, dehydration or advanced age are the likely causes.
