Diet & Nutrition

Collared lizards are insectivores. Offer a variety of live insects including crickets, mealworms, wax worms, and cockroaches. Collared Lizards are also known to eat small lizards and pinky mice in the wild.

Young collared lizards should be fed daily. Adults can be fed every other day.

Feeding Schedule

Dust food with calcium powder daily & a multivitamin once a week. Feed them the amount they will eat in 10 minutes. Do not leave numerous live insects in the cage, as they may bite or stress the lizards.

Housing & Habitat

The collard lizard's native habitat includes much of the great plains and desert southwest, from Arkansas and Missouri west to Utah and California and south into Mexico in desert, grassland and prairie environments. Small groups of collared lizards can be housed in larger enclosures. If housed together Collared

Lizards should be of similar size to avoid injury. Provide many hiding and basking areas to avoid territorial disputes. It is best to keep only one male collared lizard per enclosure.

Enclosure Size

A single adult collared lizard can be housed in an enclosure measuring 36" Long x 18" Deep x 16" High.

Substrate

Acceptable substrates are ground walnut shell or sand. The main concern with walnut shell and sand is the possibility of impaction. If the collared lizard consumes large amounts of the substrate, it could cause intestinal blockage.

Temperature & Lighting

Temperature

Collared lizards need a basking spot of 100°F - 110° F with an ambient temperature between 80° F and 90° F. At night the temperature can drop into the mid-60s.

Lighting

Since this is a diurnal species, it requires two light bulbs. One is the heat lamp which also emits UVA. The second is a UVB lamp. The UVB lamp will specifically say UVB on the box. If the box doesn't say UVB, it's not UVB.

Plant and Fish bulbs are not UVB bulbs.

Humidity & Watering

Humidity

Some keepers mist their collared lizards once to twice a week with a spray bottle. Humidity levels should be between 30% - 50%.

Watering

Always provide a bowl of fresh drinking water. Collared lizards don't drink often, however providing a water bowl is recommended.
